Croakers and snapper blues hovered along the beachfront off Wildwood, and look for bird plays to find them, said Cathy from Sterling Harbor Bait & Tackle in an e-mail. Snappers also swarmed the surf, and kingfish and a few small striped bass also swam the suds. Justin Fesler yanked in two stripers 29 inches and 30 inches that inhaled live spots in the North Wildwood wash. Plenty of short stripers were played in the back bay along the sod banks and bridges at night on clams or top-water lures. Suzanne Smith kayaked the bay and got taken on a ride by a 26-inch striper that hit along a bridge piling. Sterling Harbor is a kayak-fishing headquarters, featuring kayak and accessories sales and expert advice. Sea bass started to appear at Cape May Reef, and Alan Ritter took home a dozen from a half-day trip on his Little Devil II from Wildwood. Offshore boaters mugged lots of mahi mahi and some wahoos and white marlin, and yellowfin tuna were scarce. Crabby Jack gave crabbing two claws.
