DownUnder USA Coolers

A cooler is a cooler, right?

Wrong.

There are coolers.

And then there are high-performance coolers.

Braid Products, the California company that set standards for offshore fishing products such as rod belts and lures, is introducing a line of high-quality coolers and ice boxes in the United States.

DownUnder USA coolers and ice boxes, a division of Braid Products, come in several models:

  • DownUnder Ice Boxes are built with 2-inch thick fiberglass and are meant to be an excellent choice for boating and yachting. They can hold ice up to 15 days and come in five sizes from 53 quarts to 129 quarts.
  • Five Star Coolers are built from 2-inch thick plastic and are lightweight, strong and durable, are insulated and can hold ice up to 10 days. They come in six sizes from 17 quarts to 115 quarts.
  • Tropical Ice Boxes are made with 1-1/2-inch plastic, a plastic lid that is more than 3 inches thick and are lightweight, strong and durable. They hold ice up to seven days and come in 10 sizes from 39 quarts to 177 quarts.

All the coolers or ice boxes are seamless, so they’re easy to clean. Insulation is a main feature that sets all of them apart from most other boxes. All DownUnder boxes are insulated and have no air space between the layers.

Lower-quality boxes usually feature no insulation inside the walls. Instead they only use dead air space inside. But air is the fastest medium for heat and cold transfer, the company says. So the more air space, the faster the loss of cold air.

All DownUnder coolers also come with water- and air-tight seals that are replaceable.

The company DownUnder was already in existence before it became a division of Braid Products. The original DownUnder had already been selling high-end coolers and ice boxes in Australia, reportedly the leading brand in the country.

Braid Products’ Down Under USA is now making coolers and ice boxes available in the United States.

The coolers are located at many dealers throughout the country.

Dennis Braid founded Braid Products in 1982 and was originally a designer and builder of custom cars for the rich and famous, the company says. He took his design experience and thrust himself into the big-game fishing market.

Braid Products first sold big-game lures, such as lures for wahoo. In 1983 the company introduced its first rod belt. It now produces more than 400 products, including belts, harnesses, lures, rigs, leaders, tools, jigs, hooks, swivels, rods and more.

Dennis Braid was born in Australia and is a big-game angler with lots of globe-trotting experience.

Braid Products is now headquartered at a state-of-the-art production facility in Palmdale, California.
