Got the wintertime blues?

Not enough fishing during the cold months?

Well here’s the next best thing.

It’s showtime.

The New Jersey area features some of the best outdoor shows in the country during the next months.

So get rid of the frown, and smile, because the shows feature deals on tackle, great buys on boats, new-product displays and outdoor seminars only available at this time of year.

Here’s the schedule:

Originally the Fort Washington Show in Fort Washington, Pa., this event relocated to Reading last year. It's well known as a place for the traveling sportsman to find out about lodges, guides and charters for fishing and hunting throughout the country and world. But fishing and hunting gear and all the usual outdoor attractions are plentiful. Seminars cover topics including Pennsylvania turkey hunting, gun dog demonstrations, deer hunting, a Roland Marine fishing seminar, a dangerous reptiles show, a flying birds of prey demonstration and a Raritan Bay trophy striper seminar. Plus don’t miss the kids’ casting demo, the trout pond and mechanical bull riding.

The name says it all: This is the fly-fishing show, arguably the best anywhere. Saltwater fly fishing, freshwater fly fishing, fly tying, rod building, casting, travel—you name it, nearly every fly-fishing topic is covered. The seminar subjects are too extensive to list, but here are a few: N.J. trout streams; N.J. tuna, albies and mahi; sharks; stripers; shad; salmon; smallmouth bass; carp; fly fishing different waters in the East, West and internationally; the changing face of saltwater fishing; baitfish; reading the water; the heritage of fly fishing; and outdoor photography. Fly celebrities, authors and tiers are on hand. Fly tackle, gear, books and other products are on sale. If you’re a fly fisher, this show's probably the best.

10-Day Show Hours

The Harrisburg Show, as it’s called, is the biggest anywhere in the region, so big that fishing and hunting are featured in separate buildings. Whatever’s included in any other outdoor show is probably displayed here. Buy tickets online, avoid the lines and also get a free subscription to Field and Stream or Outdoor Life. Park at the show, or enjoy free parking and a shuttle bus from Bass Pro Shop. So if you have time, combine your trip with a Bass Pro visit. But you might not have time, once you visit the show!

5-Day Show Hours

This boat show is so big that we almost avoid walking from our booth on one side of the venue to the exhibitor’s lounge on the other side for a cup of coffee. It’s a hike! Almost every possible type of boat is featured: luxury motor and sailing yachts, sport fishers, performance boats, personal watercraft and inflatables. So is a 440-booth Marine Marketplace with marine accessories, marine technology, engines, nautical gifts and more. Attractions include Sea Quest Kids, where children can build a boat and view safe boating and water videos; Adrenaline Jam, with 17 different free video games about water sports; artifacts from the Steel Pier; the N.J. boating test-out exam for $25; and more. The New Jersey Boat Show is one of the season's last opportunities to find a great buy on a vessel at these events.
One of the season’s final boat shows of the year, the New Jersey Boat Show is one of your last chances to find a great buy on a boat at these events, billing itself as the "best-buying" show. Celebrating its 21st year, this granddaddy of the state’s boat shows houses hundreds of vessels from 15 to 35 feet, including fishing boats, family sports boats, pontoon boats, personal watercraft and more. A marketplace also features marine accessories, engines, boat brokerages, fishing tackle and other marine products. Fishing seminars with the experts, including from The Fisherman magazine, are included each day. The test-out option for the New Jersey Safe Boating Certificate is also offered each day for the state-required $25 fee. Don’t miss Date Nights: Two for one admission after 6 p.m. Friday and Saturday.

One of the largest fishing, hunting and outdoor shows in the region, The Suffern Show, as it’s known, features exhibits from most major manufacturers, reportedly the largest number of manufacturers at any show in the metro New York area. So companies such as rod and reel manufactures display the full array of their latest products, one of the main attractions. But the full gamut, and a large number, of every other kind of outdoor exhibitor, from tackle shops to guides and charters, are also featured. A large schedule of fishing and hunting seminars, including presentations by famous anglers such as Doug Hannon and Shaw Grigsby, are included each day. This show attracts one of the largest crowds, and there’s a reason. It’s got everything an outdoor show offers.

Grab a deal on gear at special show prices from local retailers. Book a trip on a charter with captains from the local area to exotic locations.
