Took brother John surf fishing at Island Beach State Park yesterday 1/6/2006. Beach was closed from A23 north due to storm damage. It looked unfishable with giant waves rolling in churning up the sand into the water and strong cross wind. I couldn't cast my red fin plug and teaser very far and didn't expect to catch anything. On my 4th cast I caught a short and ended up catching, tagging and releasing 15 shorts to 18.5" with 87 casts in 111 minutes in 1 spot - 9 on a red fin and 6 on brother John's homemade bucktail teaser. Brother John caught and released 7 shorts to 18.5 " with a 6" salt shaker on a 1.5 oz jighead and his homemade teasers. We caught 140 stripers in IBSP surf past 12 trips including 4 slots to 7 lbs. I tagged 87 and kept 1. Brother John released 52. This is the 1st year that I caught striped bass in January. I think that the stripers are eating sand crabs in the trough close to the beach. They seem to hit all day when its cloudy but only hit after sun down when its low tide and sunny. May try again today.
