Tried walk on fishing at Island Beach State Park Saturday 1/7/06. Checked
a spot where the parking lot is near the beach and saw fishermen catching
stripers. I don't like crowd fishing so I went to another parking that was empty
and a long walk to the beach expecting nobody to be there. When I reached the
beach there was a couple fishing in my spot so I fished south of them. Caught a
short on my 2nd cast. The couple left before sun down so I fished up and down
the beach for almost 3 hrs. Made 206 casts and caught 12 shorts. The last 1 at
5:29 PM was tagged with ALS cinch-up tag 669715. It was 18' and 2 lb. 2 yrs ago
I caught 1 that was tagged in the East River of NY in September of the same year
that I caught it. Returned to IBSP the next day with brother John and drove the
beach. We caught 3 shorts and lost 1 at the first stop where I didn't fish
Saturday. Then we got no hits at every other stop until we arrived at the spot
where I caught 12 Saturday. Another fisherman was leaving when we arrived.
Brother John ended the day with 6 shorts to 20' with a 6' Salt Shaker, 1.5 oz
jig head and his homemade black and white synthetic bucktail teaser. He cut his
casting finger with his 10 lb test Fireline. Using ultrathin nostretch line with
heavy lures cuts your casting finger. I switched over to 30 lb test Power Pro
which doesn't cut my finger. I caught, tagged and released 9 shorts to 17.5' on
a 30+ yr old mackerel Red Fin and brother John's homemade chartreuse natural
bucktail teaser on a 25 lb test fluorocarbon leader. You get more hits when you
use 20 or 25 lb fluorocarbon leaders. I caught my 8,500th striped bass in NJ
since 1985, 700th striped bass in NJ since last year and tagged my 100th IBSP
surf striped bass since 12/19/05 with American Littoral Society spaghetti tags.
They have a web site at www.littoralsociety.org Will
return to IBSP today. Go fish!!! |
