Took brother John surf fishing at Island Beach State Park past 2 days - 1-9 and 1-10-2006. Monday ocean was rough and dirty with strong south wind. Couldn't cast a Red Fin and teaser very far. We caught and released 5 shorts to 17" on a Red Fin, Salt Shaker and bucktail teaser. Tuesday the ocean cleared up but the wind went southeast. Still couldn't cast my Red Fin and teaser very far. We caught and released 3 shorts to 17.5" on a Red Fin, Sassy shad and brother John's homemade bucktail teaser. I caught, tagged and released my 200th IBSP striped bass in the past 7 months and caught my 51th short of 2006 in 6 trips. Same fisherman was in A23 parking lot both days. He said that he catches a lot of bass with a fresh water spinning out, 4 lb test line and small jigs. When he pulls in 1 bass after another, other fishermen fish next to him and catch nothing except 1 guy that caught an 18 lber on a white shad lure. Maybe the big bass come into the surf to eat the 12" shorts. Brother John and I fished to the south and north of the ultralight fisherman and got no hits while he pulled in 1 after another. Looks like the bass are close to the beach all day and are line and leader shy. Fly rodders with light tippet and ultralight spin fisherman can catch 50 bass a day now in the IBSP surf. The guy said that he caught an ALS tagged short but didn't notice the tag until after he released it. Most recaptured tagged fish do not get reported. I know many people that caught tagged fish and never reported them. Biologists that use tag return data get erroneous results. |
