Went fishing in the Delaware River in the rain Saturday afternoon 1/14/2006, with 78 year old Anton. He wore hip boots and a rain jacket but left his rain pants in his truck. Another fisherman was there and said that he caught bass and a 20" striper on live shiners then left to watch the football game. I found a dead shiner on the ground. I caught and released a calico, 19" pickerel and 20" walleye with a 1/16 oz yellow jig, 2" chartreuse grub tail and 2 lb test ultralight spinning outfit without a leader. Got really lucky catching the 2 larger fish without them biting my lure off. Pickerel made a lot of very fast runs. After the cold front arrived and it got very windy, the guy that weighed in the 29 lb 6 oz striper at Betty and Nick's showed up. He lost his lure then stopped fishing and came over to where I was fishing to talk. Old Anton got a wet derriere and also quit fishing. You usually get wet when you wear hip boots without rain pants. I stayed warm and dry with my Helly Hansen Bib and parka. I think that old fishermen would rather talk than fish with lures. Casting probably aggravates their arthritis. The big bass man said that he caught the 29 lber at Manasquan Inlet 4 AM on a 1/2 oz jig head with shad lure on 20 lb test nylon leader with a very sloooooow retrieve. It was the 9th striper that he caught this year that was over 35". Big bass hit at night. I caught the 20" walleye while talking to the old guys. I can fish and talk at the same time. Also chew gum and walk through the water simultaneously. Got another hit after the catch then Anton wanted to go home before dark so I quit during prime time. Best fishing is after sun down. I probably would have caught a few more fish if I stayed longer. |
