Fished a small pond in central NJ with small jigs 3/11/2006 in 62.4 degree water. Caught and released a 10" largemouth bass. When I was reeling in my jig fast near shore to make another cast a large wake swam up to my lure as it went into a patch of algae. I didn't expect to get a hit with algae on my lure but when I stopped reeling and twitched the lure there was a big swirl and I felt a hit. When I lifted my rod, it bent in half and a large fish made a run then escaped. It looked like a 3 lb bowfin. Most of the big fish that I hook with 2 lb test line escape because the hook doesn't penetrate past the barb. 3/12/2006 I fished Carnegie Lake with small jigs and caught and released 3 crappies, a white perch and a golden shiner. The fishermen using minnows for bait caught the most fish. Saw an adult bald eagle catch a gizzard shad then land in a tree and eat it. Brother John saw American shad caught in the Delaware River power plant past 2 mornings.
