Past 3 weeks the fresh water fishing was really lousy. Caught a few small largemouth, crappies, and sunfish in a small pond near my house and lost a big bowfin. At Carnegie Lake I caught a few small white perch, yellow perch, crappies and blugills. At night in the Duck Island power plant I caught a 21" and 3 17" walleyes and 19" and 18" smallmouth bass on small jigs and 12" crappie and smaller fish during the day. Got no hits on large lures. My brother John caught 36", 28" 23" and 21" striped bass early morning on big jigs and 3 American shad midday on his homemade flutter spoons. I got less than 1 hit per hour. I see a lot of fishing reports about the Duck Island power plant on the Internet and in newspapers and magazines but every time that I fished there I saw more people than fish. It's an overrated fishing spot. I tried something different yesterday and fished Colliers Mills with Mepps and 1/16 oz jig on 2 lb test. Caught and released 16 largemouth bass to 14" and 10 pickerel to 17" in 54.1 degree water. After the sun went behind the trees the fish went crazy and I got a hit on almost every cast. I was surprised that I didn't lose any lures. Didn't get any hits in deep water or shallow water with no weeds. All of the fish were in the shallows were there was a lot of weeds. Saw a few big fish follow my lure nipping at it but I didn't hook any with a steady retrieve. When I felt weeds on my lure I tried to shake them off and got hard hits with weeds on my lure. You catch more fish on lures with an erratic retrieve. I ordered the "secret weapon" from Sportsmen's Center because I couldn't find it in any store. After I pick it up and install it I should catch a lot more fish in the daytime.
